Abstract

Tourism plays an important role in regional economic development by contributing to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), creating employment opportunities, and improving community welfare. The concept of sustainable tourism emphasizes a balance between economic, socio-cultural, and environmental dimensions so that the benefits of tourism can be sustained in the long term. Banyuwangi Regency, known by its branding “The Sunrise of Java,” is one of Indonesia’s leading destinations that has undergone economic transformation through the development of nature-based, cultural, and ecotourism attractions. This study aims to examine the economic dimension of sustainable tourism by measuring the contribution of the tourism sector to the GRDP of Banyuwangi Regency. The research employs a simple linear regression analysis, with the number of tourist visits as the independent variable and the GRDP value of Banyuwangi Regency as the dependent variable. The data used covers the last five years, representing the dynamic relationship between tourist growth and regional economic performance. The data were obtained from the official publications of Statistics Indonesia (BPS) of Banyuwangi Regency and analyzed using a simple linear regression model. The results show that the number of tourists has a positive and significant effect on GRDP, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 92.6%, indicating that most of the variation in GRDP can be explained by the growth in tourist arrivals. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between tourism and regional economic development, both in Banyuwangi and other regions in Indonesia.
